GSK Science in the Summer™
Coming Summer 2016
GSK Science in the Summer™ is a is a free science education program sponsored by GSK that helps elementary school children “grow into science.” GSK Science in the Summer™ partners with institutions like The Discovery Museum to bring hands-on science courses to students. Discovery Museum will present Science in the Summer to hundreds of young learners (entering grades 2-4 next fall) that attend the Bridgeport Lighthouse summer program at the Discovery Magnet School site during the summer of 2016.
GSK Science in the Summer™ launched in the Greater Philadelphia Area 30 years ago to engage kids in science at an early age. Since its inception, GSK Science in the Summer™ has reached more than 150,000 students in Philadelphia, North Carolina and Washington, D.C./Baltimore, and launched a national pilot program to reach even more students in 2015. The national program is sponsored by GSK, administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) — the world’s largest general scientific society — and hosted by leading museums and sciences centers across the country.
GSK Science in the Summer™ teaches elementary students the core principles of science and seeks to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning through fun, engaging activities. The program also works to equalize educational opportunities and mitigate the effects of summer learning loss.
In the spring of 2016, The Discovery Museum is launching Maker Math – first offering Marker Math to students in grades 2, 3, and 4 at the Inter-district Discovery Magnet School in Bridgeport CT. Discovery Museum will provide 6 sessions with an average session length of approximately 1 hour with lessons created based on the school’s mathematics curriculum. Museum educators will incorporate creative elements ranging from construction of simple houses using wooden dowels and rubber bands to 3D design and printing to bring math concepts to life.
Maker Math is a part of the Creativity Garden – a nationwide project of the Association of Science-Technology Centers, generously supported by Disney.
